By Eric Armstrong
I was looking forward to giving this a 5-star review. And with a bit of design work, it could easily deserve that rating. It's better than average, though.
The good news: The back padding is terrific, and the curve gives a good, ergonomic workout even at low settings.
The first bit of bad news is that the set-up directions are woefully inadequate. You need to be fairly mechanically inclined to figure out what goes where, there is no indication of where the second safety pin goes. (I had to examine the pictures on the website, while writing this review--at which point I found out that I had done something wrong!)
The next bit of bad news is that while the front leg does fold under, it has to slide first. There is too much friction for it to slide easily if the bolt is snug, so it has to be loose--which makes it feel less solid.
To slide the front leg, you also have to totally unscrew the knob, and put it back in afterward so you don't lose it. (You need it in place to keep the unit from wobbling in use.)
So between the sliding, the knob, and the safety pin, it's something of a production to fold the front leg for storage. For a unit intended for home use, it would be nice if the process were more convenient. (Ideally you would pull out a pin, fold it, and let the pin spring back into place.)
Also, you can't change the height without taking out the lower leg brace and reinserting it. That's not a killer defect, but it makes things a bit harder for multiple users. (In other words, it's more of a single-user unit. Not bad. Just good to know.)
Next, the knee and leg padding rolls are a little too small and a little too narrow, as well (at least, for a big person), but the unit is usable, even so. And the back padding is so unusually excellent for a home unit that I can live with the rollers for now, and go to a foam store later if I need to.
Bottom line: If the front leg folded under more easily, the unit would merit 4.5 stars. With better leg padding and easier height adjustment, it would get 5 stars. And better setup directions are a requirement, not an option. Subtract .5 stars without them!
Hopefully, the manufacturer will hear the message, at some point, and upgrade their design.
